Eric Miller leads Coupa Spend Lab, the research and intelligence team that translates data from Coupa's community of customers into intelligence procurement leaders can act on. Coupa Spend Lab is a multidisciplinary team of economists, data engineers, statisticians, and the occasional applied philosopher, all organized around a single discipline: measuring that which resists measurement.
He is the architect of the Coupa Business Spend Index (BSI), developed in collaboration with MIT's Data Science Lab, which uses real procurement activity to anticipate spend movement in the broader economy. The BSI is the most visible piece of a longer-running thesis Spend Lab is developing on the architecture of enterprise AI.
Before Coupa, Eric worked as a procurement practitioner and enterprise software consultant. He holds a master's degree from Harvard.
Benchmarking shouldn't just tell you where you stand—it should tell you where to move next. Many procurement teams are stuck in a "downstream trap," where operational metrics are strong but strategic KPIs like Structured Spend and On-Contract Spend lag behind.
This session shows how Source-to-Pay KPIs cluster into two groups plus one critical link: the contract, procurement's highest-leverage domino. You'll learn why structured intake predicts AP efficiency at 3x the rate of any other variable, why CFOs are paying attention, and where AI can deliver the biggest near-term return. Attendees leave with a framework for connecting daily activity to strategic outcomes, backed by benchmark data.
