A new procurement leader builds credibility by understanding what stakeholders need to achieve, offering relevant support, and following through on commitments. Start with the business outcome rather than procurement's processes or savings targets. Showing how procurement can improve delivery, manage risk, or support a business priority gives stakeholders a practical reason to involve the function.

At ProcureCon East 2026, practitioners emphasized listening as a foundation for leadership credibility. Carol Danoff, EVP and Chief Procurement Officer at Warner Bros. Discovery explained her approach: "I try to explore what business problem they are looking to solve… then figure out how procurement can help them to solve those issues." She described adapting procurement's approach to each stakeholder's needs rather than expecting every business leader to value the same contribution.

Other conference conversations illustrated the value of aligning recommendations with the organization's own measures of success. One example described developing a business case around internal KPIs and approval requirements, making the proposed investment easier to explain in terms the organization already used.

Begin with focused conversations about stakeholders' objectives, constraints, and upcoming decisions. Agree on one useful contribution procurement can make, establish what success would look like, and set a realistic delivery commitment. Report back using the stakeholder's measures of progress, then use that experience to identify where earlier procurement involvement could add further value.

Join procurement leaders at ProcureCon East to explore how listening, relevant expertise, and consistent follow-through can strengthen stakeholder relationships and procurement's business contribution.
